English Language Program
The Southwestern University English Language Program (ELP) provides quality language instruction to students who need English for their academic, professional or personal goals. The program meets the needs of students with different language backgrounds and learning styles by helping them acquire the ability to use English fluently and accurately and  communicate in culturally appropriate way. Classes are based on learning a language through communicative teaching approaches and are highly interactive. The program also focuses on academic and skills-based curriculum.

Students are placed in the appropriate proficiency level from Basic to Advanced based on the results of an English language diagnostic test given after the program orientation.

The basic, intermediate and advance – level conversational English classes are offered.
Classes meet Monday through Friday for a total of 25 hours each week. Students have three (3) hours lecture in the morning and two (2) hours in the afternoon for practical English application.

The program includes:
  • Extensive conversational practice
  • Vocabulary/pronunciation development
  • Small classes to ensure full student participation
  • Educational field trips/social activities during which only English is spoken
  • Individual tutorial program
  • Guided Resort and city tour (transportation services only)
  • Interaction with other students (regular classroom setting)
  • Access to university facilities including libraries, food court, language laboratory; and foreign student lounge with internet access
  • Daily bus service from hotel to school
  • Transportation service on pick-up and drop-off from the airport upon arrival and departure
  • Certification and evaluation upon completion of the program

In consideration of the needs and interests of the students, the ELP program is highly flexible in terms of class schedule, duration of the program and learning activities.


COURSE DESCRIPTION
Basic Conversational English Course with Phonology is a beginning conversation course designed for students with limited background or experience in using English. The course focuses on improving listening comprehension, building a strong grammatical foundation and increasing conversational fluency through a broad range of self-centered activities. Emphasis will be on basic grammar, listening activities, vocabulary development, and idioms. The production of vowel and consonant sounds are also integrated.

Intermediate Conversational English Course with Phonology is designed for students with basic English proficiency through some previous instruction. Course goals are to improve fluency and speaking competence by learning expressions and grammatical forms for everyday communication both at work and in daily life. It focuses on words and meanings, phrases, clauses and sentences. Pronunciation will be improved by focusing on rhythm, stress, juncture and intonation.

Advance Conversational English Course focuses on helping students speak and understand the English language better with additional emphasis on the application of oral production skills to produce oral presentations. Speaking skills for the academic and professional world will also be stressed through a variety of exercises and role-plays to practice real-life situations.
